About Me

Billy J. Kramer

*"Billy is one of the few people who actually knew The Beatles when they were The Beatles."*

Born William Howard Ashton, Billy J. Kramer grew up in Bootle, just outside Liverpool, England. After leaving school, he began working as a trainee engineer by day while pursuing his passion for music at night, performing in local clubs under the stage name Billy Kramer.

His performances throughout Liverpool's thriving rock and roll scene soon caught the attention of John Lennon, who recognized Billy's potential as a rising pop star. Lennon encouraged Beatles manager Brian Epstein to sign Billy to an exclusive management contract. For Billy, the opportunity was irresistible, and he gladly traded his engineering career for a future in entertainment.

Not long afterward, Billy was summoned to Epstein's office, where Lennon was waiting with a suggestion: add the letter "J" to his stage name to give it a little more rock and roll flair. From that moment forward, he became known as Billy J. Kramer.

In March 1963, Billy recorded the Lennon-McCartney composition **"Do You Want to Know a Secret"** with legendary producer George Martin at Abbey Road Studios. Although The Beatles had previously recorded the song for their debut album, Billy's version became a major hit single before The Beatles released their own recording as a single.

The song launched a remarkable recording career and established Billy as one of the leading voices of the British pop explosion.

Billy toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom, opening for The Beatles both before and during the height of Beatlemania. He also shared the stage with some of the era's most celebrated performers, including Del Shannon, Gene Pitney, and The Everly Brothers.

His association with Lennon and McCartney produced a string of international hits, including **"Bad to Me," "I'll Keep You Satisfied," "From a Window,"** and **"I Call Your Name."** These recordings helped establish Billy as one of the defining artists of the British Invasion.

Another milestone came when Billy received a demo of **"Little Children,"** written by American songwriters Mort Shuman and John Leslie McFarland. Recognizing its potential immediately, Billy recorded the song, which went on to become a worldwide sensation.

In 1964, Billy achieved a remarkable milestone in recording history when **"Little Children" and "Bad to Me"** were paired on his debut American single. Both songs had already reached No. 1 on the British charts, and both went on to become Top 10 hits in America.

The record earned Billy a unique distinction in Billboard history: his was the only debut single by an artist to have both sides independently reach the Hot 100's Top 10.

It was an extraordinary achievement during the height of the British Invasion and remains one of the defining accomplishments of Billy's recording career.

Television appearances on *The Ed Sullivan Show*, *Shindig!*, and *Hullabaloo* introduced Billy to millions of viewers and further secured his place in rock and roll history. In 1964, he appeared in the legendary concert film *The T.A.M.I. Show*, sharing the bill with an extraordinary lineup that included James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, The Rolling Stones, and other music legends.

To celebrate his 50th anniversary in the music industry, Billy returned to the recording studio and released new material under the title **"I Won the Fight,"** demonstrating that his passion for music remained as strong as ever.

His tribute song **"Liverpool with Love"** also played a role in the campaign to secure Brian Epstein's long-overdue induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, honoring the man who helped launch not only The Beatles but Billy's own remarkable career.

Billy has also shared his extraordinary experiences in his autobiography, **"Do You Want to Know a Secret,"** offering readers a personal glimpse into the people, places, and unforgettable moments of one of music's most revolutionary eras.

From the clubs of Liverpool to the international stage, Billy J. Kramer's career remains an enduring part of rock and roll history—and a firsthand connection to the extraordinary years when The Beatles changed music forever.

Billy’s international momentum has lasted through the years, and he continues to record, perform and promote his Storytellers show.
